Oprah Winfrey is a rich, strong, smart, powerful, popular, trailblazing woman with a remarkable track record in the media and in business. But she’s a long way from becoming president of the United States.
Yes, she gave a great speech at the Golden Globe awards. And the rules have changed and having a lot of followers on Twitter can overcome a lack of political experience, as Donald Trump has already proven. But the notion of Winfrey running against and beating Trump is simply a pipedream among the people who are so desperate to see Trump thrown from office they will latch on to any fantastical storyline.
It’s also a sad commentary on the state of the Democratic Party that there’s no experienced, qualified candidate who is a more obvious antidote to Trump, rather than simply another billionaire TV star with more liberal views and a nicer personality. Let’s not permanently turn the race for the most powerful position in the free world into a quadrennial battle of celebrities.
