Ottawa deserved better on Canada Day

Bravo to Jim Durrell for speaking out about the security delays on Canada Day.

At a police board meeting this week, the former mayor reprimanded the authorities over the embarrassingly long lineups on Parliament Hill. This was a once-in-a-generation opportunity to celebrate a major milestone for our country and instead some people were stuck in lines for several hours at a time. The delays damaged the experience for visitors and spoiled the party for residents.

This wasn’t a matter of choosing between security and convenience. Of course we had to protect against possible threats, especially after what’s happened in London, Manchester and other European cities this year. But the process didn’t live up to what security officials promised. They weren’t able to handle the crowds, even though the number of people easily could have been predicted. This is an important year for our city and we deserved better.

Jim Durrell is right. We can’t let this happen again. Let’s hope it’s not too late and that visitors will be willing to give Ottawa another chance.
